A gaslighting jelenségével sok helyen találkozhatunk. Előfordulhat a politikai életben, családtagok, például testvérek között vagy szülő-gyerek kapcsolatban, párkapcsolatban és a munkahelyünkön is. A gaslighting az érzelmi manipuláció, pszichológiai abúzus egyik fajtája, amikor ennek elszenvedője egy idő után megkérdőjelezi a történteket, saját véleményt és emlékezőképességet, és elkezd kételkedni saját épelmélyűségében. Nagyon könnyen bele lehet csúszni ebbe a helyzetbe, felismerni és kikeveredeni belőle viszont nehéz.
